Pressured - Part 2: It's here!!

Can you see my huge smile reflected in my new pressure cooker??  I got an 8 liter Stainless Steel Soltam Pressure cooker on sale at the grocery store for 195 NIS - about $55.  It's not the set or capacity I wanted, but it was a good deal and I have it now!

And, one month later, my cook books are finally here!  Unless you need pretty, shiny, pictures showing what your food will never look like in real life, I HIGHLY recommend the cook books by Lorna Sass.  They are packed full of recipes, tips, variations, a comments that will give you a good idea of how the dish will come out.  I love great food photography, and I don't read many cookbooks.  However, since I'm new to the pressure game, and I can't keep opening the lid to taste the dish, I thought I could use some help.  These are better than the Joy of Cooking!

And, of course, I can't help but mention there is a Good Eats episode on cooking beef broth in a pressure cooker.  But only the last half is available if you live outside the U.S.

  1. I have been tempted to buy one of these for years. In fact, I just got a gift of $250 and was toying between a pressure cooker and some new camera equipment (to help with my food photos). Of course, I literally just placed the camera equipment order this evening when I was surfing the web and found your post! Murphy's Law! I hope you'll be posting about your pressure cooking endeavors. I would really love to hear how it turns out. There's always hope I'll come into some more money and be able to get this later in the year!

  2. I wouldn't recommend the kind I got. I'm still deciding whether to keep it. It was a very good deal, but if I keep it, my husband may never let me get another one. It is difficult for little me to open and I was hoping to get a quiet spring top, but I accidentally got a "jiggle-top." It also might be hard the clean under the rim of the pot. An authority on the subject recommends, "if you really intend to get into pressure cooking big-time, I'd go for a higher end cooker such as Kuhn-Rikon, WMF, or Fissler." You can get a Fagor for less money, and they seem to be getting excellent reviews. I've been eying the set I posted at the end of my post. I love the idea of the two pots with the regular top. Then I could start two things sauté-ing and add the pressure top at the appropriate time. I bought two of the pots pictured. I will at least keep one for Pesach.

    Congrats on the camera! I have a little Sony point-and-shoot. Everything is so focused. I would love to have a DSLR and get really shallow depth of field. But for now I'd rather put my money into my kitchen, kids, leisure. I am playing with setting up photos. You can see it in my guest post on cauliflower and some cookies I'm posting next Wednesday.
